Près de 8 000 dessins et manuscrits naturalistes composent la collection Lesueur, baptisée ainsi du nom de son principal auteur, Charles-Alexandre Lesueur.Il naît au Havre à la fin du 18e siècle (1778) et mène une vie peu commune : différentes rencontres et circonstances l'entraînent vers l'Australie (Voyage aux Terres Australes de Nicolas Baudin) puis aux Etats-Unis (parti pour un contrat de 2 ans, il s'y installe pour 21 ans). Il ne néglige pas pour autant la France voyageant jusqu'à la Côte-d'Azur et privilégiant tout particulièrement la région havraise.
